Chapter Ten

Darkness descended the moment that I managed to hit the light switch. I could hear my own breathing, as well as that horrendous hacking noise coming from Leo. There was no doubt that whoever was in the library had figured out they weren’t the only ones in attendance.

“Leo, stop,” I murmured, managing to walk over to where I’d last seen him. He was quite large, so he was easy to find. I patted him on the back, though I was doubtful that such a maneuver would help our situation. “Do your blip thing and go outside. Go find Liam and figure out a way to tell him that I might be in trouble.”

Might? Do I look like Lassie?

Leo was finally getting his breathing under control.

Might? We’re about to be hunted by an assassin who is used to dealing with savage werewolves, Raven. It’s clear to me now that our intellectual werewolf is lacking some sort of gene or DNA chromosome. There’s got to be a way of getting a message to this hunter that—

Something whizzed past our heads.

Literally.

One of the reasons that witches had familiars was for protection and guidance, though Leo’s role was a little bit more complicated than that due to the consequences of the necromancy spell. With that said, he’d always come through for me.

I could literally feel him pushing all his energy my way.

Instinct, Raven. It’s pure instinct, along with that self-preservation you mentioned a few minutes ago. Hurl one of those lightning blasts before it’s too late! We could be dealing with a ninja assassin using those throwing star thingies.

I’d managed to scoop Leo up into my arms and move to the side of the room where it would be difficult for whoever was out in the main part of library to reach us with a flying projectile.

What are you waiting for, Raven? Unleash your power!

It had to be an arrow.

We were definitely dealing with a hunter.

Can we pat ourselves on the back some other time, please? We’re trapped inside an eerie chamber and about to be gored by a stick with a sharp pointy end on it. I’m beginning to think being turned into a toad by the coven might not have been one of my biggest fears. Oh, I feel another asthma attack coming on!

I remained silent, not wanting to give whoever it was out in the main area a bead on our location. It took me several attempts, but I was finally able to remove my gloves. Whoever had shot the arrow must have done so from the front of the library, because I could now hear the shallow breathing of the hunter. He or she sounded out of breath, similar to how Leo did when doing too much at once. It had to do with his weight, but there was nothing he could do regarding the consequences of the necromancy spell.

I don’t know about that. I’m pretty sure I lost a pound or two when that arrow flew over our heads.
